Improve your bedroom environment and sleep with these great houseplants.

Plants to Improve Your Sleep

Creating a good bedroom environment is a very important part of getting a good night’s sleep. And, while there are many ways to improve that environment, plants can be some of the most effective. In our opinion, bringing a bit of nature inside the home can completely transform a space, and not just aesthetically. From pleasant aromas to improvements to the air quality, they can also provide a variety of health benefits.

Increased oxygen levels

The urban myth that keeping plants in the bedroom will cause carbon dioxide (CO2) poisoning isn’t uncommon but, thankfully, it’s also untrue. However, while CO2 poisoning shouldn’t be a concern, it can be nice to know that the plants you have in your room continue to produce oxygen throughout the night. Some plants that can produce oxygen, and even absorb CO2 24-hours a day include the Snake Plant, Aloe Vera and Areca Palm.

Remove indoor toxins

In addition to absorbing CO2, some plants even absorb a range of toxic pollutants which can lead to headaches, fatigue and allergic reactions. Areca Palms, for example, are great at removing toluene and xylene which are commonly found in paint thinners and nail polish, among other things. Bamboo Palms are particularly good at absorbing formaldehyde and benzene, which are often in paints and solvents. Other good plants for removing toxins include the Rubber Plant, Dracaena and Philodendron. For more plants and the toxins they can remove, check out this blog by Eartheasy.

Calming effects

Subtle, pleasant aromas and greenery are always a positive addition to any room, but some plants can even have calming effects. Plants that reduce stress and anxiety may be particularly beneficial in the bedroom to help us get to sleep and reduce the chances of the ever-so-frustrating 2am worries. Lavender is the most well-known plant to help ease anxiety, but other great choices include Jasmine and Rosemary.

Plants to avoid

Outside of being great décor choices, most plants will either have no effect on your bedroom environment or will improve it in one way or another. There are, however, some plants that are worth avoiding. For those with allergies, bonsai trees, orchids and African violets may exacerbate your symptoms. Additionally, some plants become particularly fragrant when flowering and should be removed from the bedroom so as not to alter your bedroom environment too often and affect your sleep. These include hyacinth, jasmine, citrus plants and some types of narcissus.

No matter whether you choose plants with proven benefits or simply ones that look beautiful, we’re definitely in support of keeping plants in the bedroom. If you have pets or young kids, make sure to be extra careful of plants that may be poisonous when eaten. For more tips to improve your sleep, check out our blog ‘Time for Bed’.
